The historic town of Winchelsea lies on the Princes Highway west of Melbourne, about halfway between Geelong and Colac, in the state of Victoria, Australia. With a population of around 2,000 people, Winchelsea was born as a ford crossing over the Barwon River for those heading out west to the southern coast (eg. Warrnambool) and beyond to Adelaide and South Australia. There is a lovely riverside walk through a park, across a ford (river levels permitting) and back through the park on the other side. Kids playground, public toilets on both sides of the highway, a Visitor Information Centre (open Friday, Saturday & Sunday), free barbecue facilities, and shops offering most standard items.
There's a great butcher, fish & chips & pizza shop, bakery, IGA supermarket, milk bar, post office, pharmacy, even world-class exotic leathers shop.
Although a small country town, Winchelsea is growing as population and housing cost pressures push people further out of the cities. Its long history (over 150 years) has left Winchelsea with a legacy found in many small towns - a strong community spirit.
