Award Winning Producers
Several of Winchelsea Larder's producers have recently been in the limelight with their award-winning regional produce. Camilo Olives, Apostle Whey Cheese and Warrnambool Cheese each were judged top of their categories.
Apostle Whey Cheese won "Gold" in the Australian Specialist Cheesemakers' Awards for 2009, in the washed rind category. Their cheese, called 'The Grotto', begins life as a Camembert and during maturation is washed daily, resulting in a stronger, pungent flavoured cheese which turns a rich shade of orange. The Grotto won silver in the 2007 Royal Melbourne Show Dairy Produce Awards. The Grotto is available for retail at the Winchelsea Larder and can also be enjoyed in sandwiches (try with the Warren & Hutch Caramelised Onion Jam in La Madre Sourdough bread) or as part of the Ploughman's and Cheese Platter menu items. Apostle Whey Cheese also produce a number of other soft or semi-hard cheeses including brie and blue.
Warrnambool Cheese won "Gold" too at the 2009 Cheesemakers' Awards, for their black-waxed Vintage Cheddar. The vintage cheddar is based on a traditional sharp English style, full and robust, and much richer in flavour than standard cheddar. Matured for up to 16 months, it has a black wax outer. Warrnambool Cheddar is similarly available at Winchelsea Larder in sandwiches and menu items. Other Warrnambool Cheddar products available for purchase include a Chilli Cheddar and a Tomato & Chive Cheddar.
Camilo Olives made a clean sweep of it at the 2009 Royal Melbourne Show winning the prestigious Victorian Trophy for the best gold medal-winning extra virgin olive oil, the Campionship Trophy for the commercial category and Gold in its individual category of robust commercial bulk oil. “The clean-sweep of trophy, championship and gold medal is a great result, particularly considering that there are more than 4000 commercial and boutique olive oils available throughout Australia,” said Managing Director Joan McGovern. Joan and daughter Anne Rathjen specialise in boutique oils with premium blends containing very different characteristics and tastes. Winchelsea Larder stock a range of Camilo Olives olive oils including a gift-pack containing a selection of mini Extra Virgin Olive Oils, a great gift for the foodie.
